Warm Up Exercises:

Tell Your Story in One Minute

Count off in pairs. The prompt is a moment that changed your life. This exercise can begin with drawing a timeline for a few minutes. Draw a straight line down the page and draw branches for those moments that changed your life. I suggest dividing the timeline into decades and then draw branches off the timeline such as: first day of school, learning to read, learning to ride a bike, birth of sibling, learning to drive a car, first kiss, graduation, serious illness, first job, first true love, first heartbreak, marriage, divorce, children, death, travel, first time in real trouble, first spiritual crisis etc. I allow the group to work on this timeline for a few minutes, then explain that they can continue to work on it later.

Number 1 chooses one of these moments and has one and ½ minutes to tell the story to their partner Number 2.

Number 2 has a minute to tell their story to their partner Number 1.

We go around the circle and each person can tell their story in only three sentences.

Then I ask them to consider these questions and write about them for five minutes:

As the listener:

What drew you into the other person’s story?

What detail was important?

What questions did you have?

Where did you connect and where didn’t you?
